Most people would be looking forward to a visit to New Orleans, but enroute we can consider stops at Tangipahoa or Ponchatoula (don't you just love those names?). Tangipahoa is the site of a confederate bootcamp, and at Ponchatoula we can visit a cypress swamp. At New Orleans, once again, there is much for the tourist to see and do. A best bet would be a walking tour in the Jackson Square area, the French Quarter or the Garden District.
