First came the discovery of gold, then came the people, and then came the paddlewheelers, taking the gold out and bringing supplies in. Today, I spent three hours aboard Discovery III, plying the waters of the Chena and Tanana Rivers near Fairbanks, Alaska. It was a pleasant ride, but also very educational.
