It was obvious to me that the shops along Back Street were definitely competing for the tourist dollar and offering the same or more than the town's main street. One thing that the Back Street lacked however is a good sidewalk for pedestrian traffic. Without that, people will tend to favor the Front Street and its more comfortable walks.
