August 16, 2005 - St.Thomas Front Street

It's my habit that as I arrive at a new location, I like to obtain a a map of the area, both for preventing my getting lost, or to learn about attractions in the area. St.Thomas presented little challenge or concern because the city center area was arranged around two main streets - Front Street and Back Street.

My walk into town led me directly to Front Street, which seemed to be the more "upscale" street, with shops and eating establishments, whle Back Street is more the "second tier" of shops and so on. As you might expect there was the usual array of souvenir shops, but also a large number of jewelry stores. The cities of the Caribbean are very much dependent on the tourist trade, but I didn't realize how much jewelry business is carried out in the islands.
