The large El Morro fortress located on the entrance to San Juan's harbor, can also be entered from the city on land. El Morro is about one mile from Castillo de San Cristobal. A tall, thick stone wall extended from one fortress to the other, provided still more defense of the city. Observation posts are found at each fort, giving commanding views of the sea and land. A formidable defense for its day.
