Perhaps more common in Japan, but not unexpected at religious sites such as this mosque at Casablana. We were given plastic bags in which to put our shoes which we were asked to take off at the mosque's entrance door. As huge as the mosque is, some areas were carpeted while most area floors were done with marble. It was not difficult or uncomfortable to comply with the request for shoes off.
