Our group made only one local sightseeing visit at Casablanca. Personally, I would like to have spent more time in the city, seeing attractions such as Rick's Cafe, a re-creation of the cafe made famous in the movie Casablanca, with Humphrey Bogart.
We spent the morning touring the Mosque of Hassan II and then spent four hours in the afternoon, traveling by bus to Marrakech further inland. Considering it took four hours to get there and four hours to get back, that was eight hours of valuable time that might have been otherwise spent. The visit to Marrakech, however, was most interesting and worth the trip.
The visit to Casablanca's largest mosque was most interesting as well. The third largest mosque in the world, it was built in 1993 to help celebrate the king's 60th birthday. The mosque is a huge and very attractive structure. The mosque contains many, many examples of Islamic (and French) architecture. The interior of the mosque is decorated but is quite unlike christian churches. There are no pews, for instance, but rather considerable open floor space for worshipers to kneel, bow and pray.
