The ship's captain does not necessarily join the psssengers for every meal but two meals are especially important from a courtesy and social point of view. The ship's captain joined our group for the Captain's Dinner, held early on the cruise, and again for the so-called farewell dinner at the end of the cruise.
Certain passengers were invited to join the captain at his table, and I'm sure those passengers, and the captain himself, enjoyed the social conversations during that meal. Me? I sat in the cheap seats and enjoyed a simpler table protocol (but I would have joined the captain, had I been invited).
