No one quite knows just how the apes came to Gibraltar but various theories are readily available. Some say the apes date back to prehistoric times, but there is no evidence to support this theory. Others say the Moors transported the apes from Africa but again there is no record to support that theory either.
Britain has long maintained that it will remain at Gibraltar as long as the apes are there, suggesting that the British keep bringing more apes to the place. At present there are about 250 apes which inhabit the top of the rock.
The public is advised not to feed the apes or try to have physical contact with the apes. The apes are noted for being thieves, taking anything they can get they hands(?, paws?) on from unsuspecting visitors. But right or wrong the apes seem to be fed assorted foods from the snack bar at the top of the rock.
Everyone agrees that the apes are fun to watch as they perform their own version of a circus, climbing easily around the viewing area.
