The Courtyard of the Lions was the focal point for the early Sultan's private dwellings. On both sides of the courtyard were the women's quarters (harems) which could also be used for visiting diplomatic and political guests. Based on records, it is believed that the buildings surrounding the courtyard were built sometime after 1362.
