July 31, 2006 - Babushkas; Vendors and beggars

At most points where our train stopped, there were an assortment of trainside vendors. The women who come to sell things at the train are often called the "babushkas" because of the head scarf they wear. They sell, or attempt to sell, a wide variety of goods. The woman in this photo was selling small items out of the bag she carried. The most ambitious vendor I saw one day was actually carrying chandeliers! Books I had read before the trip led me to expect more food vendors at train stops, but I saw very few.
