In many foreign countries it is customary to pay a person for the privilege of taking his/her photograph. You should also use a bit of sign language first to obtain permission to take the individual's photo.
I paid this old man a few rubles, and as is often the case, he signaled that he would like more, which I didn't offer. He was not dressed as a monk, so I'm not sure if he had any particular role or duty at the monastery. So, a photo, just for the record.
