In addition to a city tour, our group also traveled out of Ulan Ude to visit a Buddhist Monastery. This photo shows one of the rather typical residence buildings, complete with its use of blue for the shutters. The belief or reason for choosing blue for shutter paint is that when the shutters are closed, the blue color shows to the interior of the building, reminding people of the sky.
