July 24, 2006 - Arrival at Ulan-Ude

When we arrived at Ulan Ude, we had covered about 3649km, going westbound from our initial starting point at Vladivostok. At this point, we still had another 5640km before reaching Moscow. Ah, but who's in a hurry. This is a relaxing train ride with stops every now and then for local excursions. It was fun.

Ulan Ude serves as a gateway to Mongolia, just a short distance south. Ulan Ude has a large population of indigenous Buryat people who have opposed Russian incorporation and have retained their own language, culture and religion.
