I made comments about the dining cars earlier. There were two of them on our train, used at mealtime but also used as lecture rooms or for social gathering between meals.
The car shown here was rather Victorian, I thought, with its upholstered, high back chairs. But the food was the same, always good. Posted dining hours were always honored so for the hungry diner, food was avaiable on schedule (that included me, most of the time).
As we have seen in other photos, the dining cars were also used for lecture periods and/or social gatherings between meals. Instead of reading/writingin your compartment, you could spread out your materials at a dining table, perhaps with a bit more comfort than your compartment.
Or you might meet with friends for a card or table game, or to have table space to spread out things you might be looking at or discussing. It made sense to use the dining cars for dining as well as passenger comfort.
