July 22, 2006 - Crossing the Amur River

Just outside Khabarovsk, the railroad passed along the Amur River and at one point crossed the river as our train began its westward journey to Moscow and European Russia.

The Amur River is Russia's longest river, measuring 2824km (1694 miles). Those us who had maps or travel books could watch the continuous mileage markers along the rail (actually signs marked with kilometers remaining to Moscow). Knowing our postition on the railway, we could look for significant sights, such as the crossing of the Amur River. It was fun to plot our progress.

Vladivostok is 9289km from Moscow so there were many occasions to look for the mileage signs and note our position. A simple but fun thing to do to pass the time, and maybe do some specific watching for noteworthy sights.
