July 22, 2006 - Safety check along the way

Our train was a private train. Our train did not stop at every stop along the rail to pick up or discharge ordinary travelers. Our train stopped at predetermined cities along the way, and parked on a siding while our group did local touring. We would return, reboard the train, and our train would continue on its journey.

But our train did stop at a number of other points along the line so as to perform various functions. Such as stop may only be for a few minutes. We were allowed to get off and stretch or take a short walk, but our attendants kept close watch that we didn't wander off and would reboard the train before it resumed.

Some of the functions done at these intermediate stops were things like changing the engine every so many miles/kilometers. That may have been done to rest a given engine or perhaps each engine only operated between designated points.

Water was replenished aboard the train to meet the needs of toilets, dining cars, bar car and so on. As shown in this photograph, safety checks were performed at each railroad car. A team of two, usually, would walk along and banging various components under the car, looking for potential problems.

It was good to know that the railroad was investing in our safety
