July 21, 2006 - Train attendants

My berth was a deluxe sleeping compartment which had its own bath (shower, toilet, sink, mirror). On my railroad car there were only five deluxe compartments, each occupied by a single person (at added expense, I might point out). Yet our railroad car had two full time attendants who made the entire trip with us, each covering about a twelve hour shift.

The attendants brought us morning coffee, with biscuit or cookies. They provided us with fresh fruit, soft drinks and other 'goodies' A female attendant is referred to as provodnitsas and a male attendant is referred to as provodnik. My car had one of each.

The attendants carefully watched who boarded the train, looked out after us when we dismarked for short stretch breaks, and were 'on duty' to welcome us back from a day's outing. Well done!
