July 21, 2006 - First meal aboard the train

All aboard!! After a very full day of sightseeing at Vladivostok, we finally boarded our train at 7:50PM and began our rail journey. First destination? The city of Khabarovsk, just 766km to the north. North? You ask! Well, yes. We first have to 'get around' China, then at Khabarovsk we began to head west towards Moscow and European Russia.

Our train journey to Khabarovsk was 460 miles, which we covered during the dark of night. Sorry, no sightseeing along this portion of the rail, but many hours of viewing the landscape on later days of the journey. For this initial segment, the plan was to arrive at Khabarovsk at 8:00AM and do some touring during the day.

Pictured here is our first meal aboard the train. We had two dining cars on the train. This one had a more modern decor whereas the other dining car was more Victorian, I would say.

The food at all meals was excellent. My personal complaint was for too much boned fish. The meat dishes were quite good, soup and salad each day was excellent, and the desserts were usually sweet and tasty. Well done.
