January 22, 2008 - Our hotel at Merida

Merida is a city of about one million people located in the northwest corner of the Yucatan Peninsula. It put us near the Maya ruins we wanted to visit and photograph. It's a sprawling town with very few high rise buildings. Our hotel was one of the few tall structures. I happened to be allocated a room on the tenth floor, so I had a so-called "room with a view"

Because of the building being a bit unique, I thought I would take a picture of its exterior. That resulted in an unexpected learning situation. My Nikon D50 camera has many features and one of them has to do with choosing a focus option. At the time of this picture, my camera was set to use five focus points. Imagine a focus point in the center of the view finder and four more, one in each corner of the view.

Well, the interesting thing about this situation was the four corners tried to focus on what was basically an empty sky, and couldn't find anything to focus on. To make a long story short, I had to put the camera on manual focus in order for the shutter to release and take the picture. Trying to use automatic just wouldn't work. You learn something new every day.
