February 8, 2008 - Been here, done that....

I have borrowed a few photos from my first trip to Ireland, to somehow make a point relative to this trip. For instance, the weather. On my first trip, hiking throughout the southwest of Ireland, it rained every day and we hike about ten miles each day on some pretty muddy trails. Not a good experience.

On this, my second visit to Ireland, the weather was dry but cold. Most days, I had to deal with heavy frost on the windshield of my hire car (rental car), and shiver a bit until the car warmed up. But when I was away from the car, I had to sip up my jacket and put my hands in my pockets to avoid at least some of the frigid cold. By midday, the temperature had warmed up a bit, so walking around with just my jacket for warmth, it wasn't too bad. I didn't bring a rainsuit as I did on my first trip, but I was glad to have brought my umbrella.

You probably have noticed the sign in this photo. Almost all road traffic signs were in Gallic with the English equivalent at the bottom of a given sign. I tried to break my habit of first looking at the top of a given sign, but I couldn't adjust. By the time my eyes and mind acknowledged that I couldn't read Gallic and moved onto the lower part of sign, me and the car were past the sign. If I was trying to read a sign at a roundabout, if I missed it, I just stayed on the roundabout for another go-round. That worked.

On this trip, I got lost three times and wasted a good bit of time getting back on track. My getting lost was almost always due to poor signage on the Irish highways. More about that later.
