Our program leader, Tanya Shepard, warned us before we crossed into Latvia, that going through customs and passport control could be a matter of minutes or even hours. On that day we breezed through the checkpoint. Today was different - ugh!
In this photograph, you can see a wire going horizontally above the line of traffic. Traffic lights were hung there and you waited until you got a green light to proceed to the actual checkpoint building. And wait we did - for two very long hours! How could anything be so slow, and why???
When our bus got to the head of the line, we disembarked and went through passport control while the bus was searched. There were two passport control agents and although they had computer access, the process took a long time. A traveler doesn't get a warm feeling about the country with this kind of delay. As it turned out though, Estonia was perhaps the best liked country our group visited during this trip. Strange.
