This morning our group attended a lecture given by Professor Peteris Lakis from the Latvian Academy of Culture. His talk followed much the same lines as other lectures, describing Latvian independence de jour, as he put it.

He describe the country's turmoil in 1918-1922, the dictatorship of 1934, the Nazi and Russian occupations during 1941-1990, and finally the renewed independence gained in 1990. He closed his lecture with some very timely remarks about conditions in Latvia and the world as of today.
