On my Elderhostel trip to Central Europe in 2001, I learned from others to check out the local open air market. That wasn't quite my objective while in Riga, but I did spot some unusual buildings (looking much like huge quonset huts), so I thought I would check it out one morning.
Being the early riser that I am, I chose this day to go for a walk before the hotel began to serve breakfast at 7AM. The unusual buildings I spotted turned out to be the Open Air Market in Riga. There were sellers of all kinds outside the buildings (fresh fruit and vegetables, hand made crafts, you name it). And on the inside of the buildings was merchandise you couldn't believe.
The buildings were clean and neat and loaded with good things to eat. Despite the early hour, the place was crowded with early morning shoppers. Had I been home, I probably would have bought a lot of things, but as it worked out, I just bought a couple of pounds of fresh cherries, which I treated the group later that morning.
