July 1, 2003 - Bus to Riga, Latvia

One down, three to go! After spending a few days in Vilnius, Lithuania, it was time to pack our bags and head north to Latvia, our second of four countries to be visited on this trip.

In spite of spending a lot of time on busses, I have to say that almost all were new and very comfortable. In one case, because of narrow roads, a smaller bus was used, and that was not that comfortable.

After sitting in the front of the bus a couple of times, I decided to use a semi-permanent seat near the back of the bus. With this came an unexpected 'duty'. Given that each person in our party was allowed one large suitcase, space was limited in the underside of the bus. But people had at least one carry-on type of bag, and in a couple of instances, two.

Well, my extra duty, being at the back of the bus, was to put everyone's carry-on bag in the wide last seat of the bus, and then on arrival at whatever the day's destination might be, I started the 'chain gang' to unload those bags. All of this was easier than having individuals trying to negotiate the narrow bus aisle, back and forth, to put or get a bag. Hey, it worked. Except for the time, I punched myself in the mouth, when a strap broke on one bag, and with the loss of that weight in my hand, my hand (fist) went upward and straight into my lip! Ouch!
