May 17, 2004 - Arrival at Copenhagen - The Mermaid Hotel

05170401.htm

As with other travel journals I have put on my web site, I have included some photos of hotels, hotel rooms, ships and ship cabins, etc, just to show you what my accomdations looked like.

This photo shows the Mermaid Hotel in "downtown" Copenhagen. Europeans tend to speak of "city center" rather than the American expression of "downtown". In any case, the hotels used for each of the cities to be visited on this trip were certainly in the respective city centers. This was most convenient because one could venture out on a self tour and be within easy reach of most attractions. This was not the case on my trip to the Baltics last year where we stayed at more suburban locations.

The hotel's name (Mermaid) is not really that unusual, given that Hans Christian Anderson, the famous author of children's stories, including the "Little Mermaid", is an honored Dane. Later I will show photos of the Little Mermaid statue, which I visited several times during my stay in Copenhagen.
