May 12, 2002, Breakfast

As I ate my bagels and cantaloupe at breakfast, I had no way of knowing that today was going to be a dark day for me (and my cameras).

Generally, I went to sleep when it got dark, which was usually between 8-9PM. Campfires are not common on the river, because you have to carry out your ashes and leave a very clean camp site. I can see where that would discourage folks telling tales around a glowing nightime fire.

I had a flashlight and plenty of batteries, but somehow reading in bed (sleeping bag) didn't interest me. So, I slept from 9-3, got up for a short while, used the toilet, and then back to bed for maybe another hour or two. I was certainly up by 5AM, took down my tent and began to pack my things for the day. What I wanted at 5AM was that first cup of coffee, and you can see others having that cup in this photo.

Shown in this photo are Sid and Bruce in the back, and Dennis, Carol, Roger and Bill H in the front.
