Later this day, our group took a bus ride to the remote village of Anoya, located in the hills of Crete. While there we learned of the brave villagers that served in the resistance during the second world war. Brave people to be sure.
The original village of Anoya was destroyed by the Nazis in retaliation of the actions against them. Many males were killed by the Nazis attempting to curtail the actions of the resistance 'soldiers'.
This photo shows a statue erected to memorialize the efforts of the local heroes who fought the Nazi occupation of their homeland. The defacto uniform of the resistance force included black clothing, black hat and black boots.
