Most international trips begin with a plane ride to somewhere. Of course there other ways to get to your destination (e.g. a cruise ship). But, in my case, my trip to Greece began with a short shuttle from Reno, Nevada to San Francisco, where I then boarded the Lufthansa 747 shown in this photo.
My Reno to SF trip was short and simple. I had a layover of a few hours but that gave time for things like currency exchange (dollars for Euros, the dollar being weak at this time), and time for a 'last' American meal. So, what did I choose while at the SF airport? Chinese food, to be sure.
I had a pleasant surprise checking in for my flight with Lufthansa. An agent called me from being first in line, to her station, only for her to walk away for several minutes to assist another agent. I waited patiently for my agent to return and when she did, my check-in went smoothly. As I started to leave, she ask me to "hold on", did some keying and then told me she was upgrading me to business class. Bless her soul - a business class seat for an overnight flight is far better than struggling with a more cozy (tight) coach seat. As a result of her kindness, I had a good four hours sleep in a wide seat that reclined almost to a horizontal position. Ah, such comfort!
