One of the presentations given to our group at the Inn dealt with conservation on Rarotongo. The speaker came well prepared for his talk, complete with visuals projected from his laptop. He is a member of a volunteer team that has organized a number of land owners (lease holders) to set aside an area devoted to protecting a bird called the Kakerori. What number remain are threatened, by of all things, rats, which can climb trees and catch the birds. Among other things, the conservation group has placed rat poison traps throughout the area.
So, our agenda for this day was to visit the conservation area, take a hike through the heavy vegetation, and hopefully share in seeing the protected birds. Well, we didn't see them, but we did hear them, and our tour guide did a good job of explaining more than just the bird conservation program, but he pointed out plants and other things in the area. Well done.
