January 27, 2007 - Saturday and the Open Market

The cultural market is held each Saturday at Avarua, Rarotongo. It is much like a farmer's market or open market in many cities throughout the world.

There are permanent booth used by vendors who participate on a regular basis and also 'drive in' spots for other infrequent vendor participants. The market has a large area devoted to food and this day it was quite crowded, as though people had not eaten for some time. The crafts for sale were very similar to those products readily available at gift shops. The prices may have been more negotiable with market vendors.

Our group's agenda for the day did not allocate much time for visiting the market but based on what we saw it didn't seem that there was sufficient attraction to keep us there longer. So, off we went to our next appointment, at Parliament.
