January 27, 2005 - Deception Island & Whaler's Bay

Our first activity for this day was a landing at Whaler's Bay within the harbour-like area of Deception Island. The expedition leader came on the ship's public address system to describe our entry to the harbour. The entrance is called Neptune's Bellows and a most important characteristic of this passage is its shallow depth. The captain, being experienced in entering the harbour area, knew to keep a hard right in the passage so as to avoid the shallow area. We made our entry safely and had a good morning's visit to the island.
