January 23, 2005 - Port Lockroy, Antarctica

After two days crossing Drake's Passage and all that that entailed, and then having to abort our expected landing at Vernadsky, our group was certainly anxious to land 'somewhere' and begin our Antarctica expedition. Our first landing then was at Port Lockroy, a British research station turned museum.

Port Lockroy, an 800m long harbour on Wiencke Island is probably Antarctica's most popular landing spot for tourists. We enjoyed visiting with the penguins at Jougla Point and stopped in at the very limited museum. Postcards could be purchased and mailed, with the understanding that it may take up to 10 weeks to reach their destinations. Ah, the life of an expedition.
