On the first day aboard the Polar Star, the passenger's were given a warm welcome by the ship's captain. He gave brief mention to the operation of the ship, its facilities and how the passenger's could best enjoy the voyage. The captain was very open and could be approached for conversation almost always unless he was involved in some ship operation. He could be observed on the bridge most days giving navigation instruction to the steersman.
