January 19, 2005 - Tierra del Fuego National Park

Before leaving for Antarctica on the Swedish icebreaker Polar Star, our group had time for a field trip to Tierra del Fuego National park near the city of Ushuaia. The area and the park gets its name from earlier times when explorers referred to the area as the land of fire, because of the many fires of its native people, viewable from ships at sea. As with many nation's parks, Tierra del Fuego attempts to preserve the wildlife and natural terrain. In this photo we see what probably is the southern most post office in the hemisphere, on the shores of the Beagle Channel, our waterway to get to the ocean and Antarctica.
