RACE
Receive-any control element. A type of control field held in the CICS receive-any pool set aside for VTAM receive-any operations.

RACF
Resource Access Control Facility. An IBM product which provides access control by identifying and verifying users of the system.

RACFG
RACF Security Guide. A CICS reference manual.

RACHECK
A macro used to check a user's autorization to a RACF-protected resource or function.

RACINIT
A macro used to verify the user's authority to enter work into the system.

RACROUTE
A macro used to invoke RACF to provide security functions.

RAD
Rapid application development. A tool that provides visual interfaces and high-level constructs for programming.

RAIA
Receive-any input area. A type of input area held in the CICS receive-any pool set aside for VTAM receive-any operations.

RAID

RAMAX
A CICS initialization parameter used to specify the size of an I/O area allocated for each RECEIVE ANY issued by CICS.

RAPOOL
A CICS initialization parameter used to specify the size of the CICS RECEIVE ANY pool for VTAM operations.

RAS
Reliability, Availability, Serviceability. A common term used when describing the characteristics of a software product or environment.

RBA
Relative byte address. A data identification method used with VSAM entry sequence data sets (ESDS).

RCDS
In CICSVR, a Recovery Control Data Set.

RCF
Report Controller Facility. A CICS-provided spooling program for use with the VSE/ESA operating system.

RCT
Resource Control Table. A set of definitions for the CICS use of DB2.

RDBMS
Relational Database Management System. A common term used to identify systems such as IBM's DB2.

RDG
Resource Definition Guide. A CICS reference manual.

RDO
Resource Definition Online. A CICS-provided facility for defining the attributes of resources used in a CICS environment, such as terminals, files, programs, etc.

RDS
A VSAM KSDS used for CICS emergency restart.

RDSA
Read-only dynamic storage area, below the 16mb line.

repeatable read
The notion that a data record is locked to prevent updates until the the current record owner completes its recoverable unit of work.

reply-to-queue
In MQSeries, the name of a queue to which an application is to send its message.

REQUESTMODEL
A CICS resource definition to relate an inbound IIOP message to a CICS transaction to be initiated.

RESP
RESP and RESP2 are data areas into which indicative information is returned regarding exception conditions for the CICS command just executed. An alternative to HANDLE/NOHANDLE.

REXX
Restructured Extended Executor. As used with CICS, an interpretive programming language.

RFC
Request for Comments. A method used by standards groups to solicit, document, seek agreement and finally publish standards.

RFP
Request for proposal.

RFQ
Request for quote.

RG
Release Guide. A CICS reference manual.

RG6
RG6 Quad Shield. Coaxial cable with insulated center wire and four layers of shielding. Supports multiple channels and digital data. Used for cable TV, digital satellite, cable modem and high speed interactive video services

RH
Request header.

RID
Record identification.

RIDFLD
Record identification field. The key, RBA, RRN or block reference for the record to be read from VSAM or BDAM.

RIS
Recoverable in-doubt structure. In DBCTL, an area constructed for each unit of recovery when a failure occurs.

RISC/A>

RJE/A>
Remote Job Entry.

RLS
Record Level Sharing. A method for sharing VSAM files for concurrent read/write operations among one or more CICS regions within an MVS sysplex.

RM
Resource manager. For example, DB2.

RMAS

RMF
Resource Measurement Facility. An IBM program that collects system-wide data describing processor, I/O, main storage and system resource manager activity.

RMI
  1. Resource Manager Interface. A CICS interface between its task related user exits and a resource manager.
  2. Remote Method Invocation. A protocol used on the Internet by which an object on one platform can initiate a method on another platform.

RMODE
Residency mode. An attribute of a program, indicating where it can reside, either above or below the 16mb line. regions within an MVS sysplex.

RODM
Resource Object Data Manager. A NetView for MVS repository of subsystem performance information.

ROI
Return on investment. A common measurement used to determine profitability or benefit of some endeavor.

ROLLBACK
ROLLBACK specifies that all changes to recoverable resources made by the task since its last syncpoint are to be backed out.

ROR
Resource Owning Region. A term associated with a CICS region which is a single point of access to specific resources (files, queues, etc) on behalf of other CICS systems.

ROUTEDMSGS
An optional specification for a terminal definition which defines whether the terminal is eligible to receive messages sent using the BMS ROUTE command.

RPC
Remote Procedure Call. A generic term used to describe a method by which one program can invoke another program. Specific implementations of RPC would include ONC RPC and DCE RPC.

RPL
  1. Request Parameter List. A VTAM control block that contains parameters necessary for processing a request (data transfer, connecting or disconnecting a terminal, etc).
  2. Relocatable Program Library. A data set used to store CICS application programs, which are fetched (loaded) at execution time.

RPS
Rotational position sensing. A feature of a direct access device which permits the device to disconnect from the channel during positional delay.

RRDS
Relative Record Data Set. A VSAM file in which records are identified using their relative record number (RRN).

RRE
Residual Recovery Element. Contains a recovery token as used with IMS DBCTL during recovery of in-doubt conditions.

RRG
Recovery and Restart Guide. A CICS reference manual.

RRMS
Recoverable Resource Management Services. A function of OS/390. RRMS consists of Resource Recovery Services (RRS), context services and registration services.

RRN
Relative Record Number. A relative record within a VSAM Relative Record Data Set (RRDS).

RRS
Resource Recovery Services. A function of OS/390. RRS is the OS/390 syncpoint manager.

RSA
  1. Register save area.
  2. RSA. An asymmetric encryption algorithm used to provide network security.

RSCLMT
LSR resource limit. A percentage specification used by CICS when calculating LSR pool operands.

RSE
Remote System Explorer

RSLC
Resource Security Level Checking.

RSN
Relative slot number.

RTA
Real Time Analysis. A function of the IBM CICSPlex product to monitor, detect and report on user defined events.

RU
Request Unit. A unit of VTAM data transmission.

RVI
Reverse interrupt. A means by which a BTAM-supported terminal can indicate that it wants to send data.
